Neville's Quarter September News!

Hello friends,

We have a ton of great things happening with Neville's Quarter this month:

1. New Release = "Karma Who" written by our very own Lex Headley.

This song is about karma and how it always catches up to you in the end. In the song you can hear the pitter-patter of feet as the main character of the song tries to outrun karma. But the hunt is on and there is no escape.  The song title also pays homage to Lex's all time favorite show Doctor Who; making reference to timey-wimey elements and having a hero to set things right in the end, just like in the show.
(Fun fact: Lex used to be on a Podcast that reviewed Doctor Who episodes and comics, called The Doctor Who Show).

2. Neville's Quarter at Carrboro Music Festival

We are honored to be playing this festival for the 2nd year in a row! This year we will be on the Frank Cole Building Stage on the corner of Weaver Street and Center Street. Show time is 1 pm! We are psyched to see most of our musical friends playing around Carrboro this day. Speaking of which, there is a particular group of friends hosting a singalong that we plan to join at 4pm at the Carrboro City Hall building under the big oak tree! Come sing with us!

3. Shakori Hills Performance On The Meadow Stage

 

We still can't believe that we are doing this one! I guess dreams do come true if you work hard and don't take no for too permanent an answer.  We get the distinct honor of starting things off on the Main Stage (The Meadow Stage) at Shakori Hills on Friday October 5th at Noon!  As soon as we found out about this gig Brian had a vision of us playing at night time in front of hundreds of people under a full moon and so we wrote a brand new song called "Howling At The Moon." We can't wait to play it there and hope to see some familiar faces.

We  woke up this morning with "Bluegrass" on our minds, so we wanted to share our lyrics and this playlist of tunes we put together.  We wrote one of our favorite recordings so far "Bluegrass On My Mind" as a tribute to some of our favorite bluegrass tunes. We took the titles of a bunch of our favorite songs and weaved them into this fun composition that includes tunes from many of the great bluegrass players of all time, including Bill Monroe, Toni Rice, Doc Watson, David Grisman, ect... The Weekly Neville's Quarter Acoustic Breakdown Update

Hello everyone.
New songs, check it out.

We added Front Country, Sam Bush, Bryan Sutton, Mary Gauthier, and The Way Down Wanderers to the playlist this Saturday morning. Respectively, their songs are "Sake of the Sound," "Play By Your Own Rules," "Chase The Moon," "Mercy Now," and "Heading North." 

The breakdown of the awesomtastic songs is below.

"Sake of the Sound"
By Front Country
This song will likely give you goosebumps. At first it draws you in, as powerfully as the smell of coffee in the morning. We suspect it has something to do with the rhythm... it's mesmerizing. The vocals are powerful and awesome. The words are all too appropriate. It's all about "the sound" and quite literally you'll love this song for "the sound." It's a bit ridiculous actually, how much the words of this song are just reflecting exactly what you're feeling while listening.

"Play By Your Own Rules"
By Sam Bush
Great folk feel to this song; it's old, authentic, and bursting with life.  Sam Bush is a legendary mandolin player in bluegrass circles. This is a song about making your own decisions and your own rules for how your life should go. We hope to possibly make it to Merle Fest, where he'll be playing this summer.

"Chase The Moon"
By Bryan Sutton
This is a great pairing with the previous Sam Bush song. Similar frantic, upbeat, running through the cornfields, feel. The song is actually sort of about that, the feeling that you can't stop chasing something. In this case, the thing they're chasing is a love they can't get. Must be maddening cuz this song just doesn't want to stop once you press play.

"Mercy Now"
By Mary Gauthier
The pace of our playlist goes way down, once this song starts playing. Mary is so relaxing to listen to; her voice is intimate and soulfully honest. This is such a sad song, about people she loves, people who are in trouble, people who carry tremendous stress, and who really could use some kindness and help. We like Mary and her compassionate sad song... it's really great music, check her out.

"Heading North"
By The Way Down Wanderers
We had to flip a coin on which Way Down Wanderers song we would use for the playlist this week, we were both so passionate about their songs. You will love their stuff too. This song's about traveling up North to be with someone whom they love and about their journey it takes to get there. There's lots to like about this song. If you're interested in hearing more check out the song Dead Birds; there is some really fun string instrumentals to listen to in that song.


 

The Weekly Neville's Quarter Acoustic Breakdown Update - March 3rd, 2018

It's a new month and we're feelin' good this Saturday listening to these chill songs we have found for you all today. 

We added Caitlin Washburn, Mary Rocap, Sara Watkins, Anna Tivel, and Mt. Joy to the playlist today. Respectively, their songs are "Words of Love," "A Fickle Wind," "Long Hot Summer Days," "Riverside Hotel," and "Jenny Jenkins." The breakdown of the songs is below.

"Words of Love"

If Bob Dylan had a better voice and was female, we think you'd get someone like Caitlin Washburn. With Bob's friends, the harmonica and guitar, Caitlin tells some great stories and shares some feelings that will surely resonate with you. She's a local of Carborro, North Carolina, and we happen to be playing with her on March 12th at the Cave! We are super excited to hear her live and hope you will join us.

"A Fickle Wind"

This song has an unexpected lilt to it, much like a fickle wind. She sings the most interesting intervals (I went to a piano and figured it out, it's a minor 6th) in the chorus. It's a soft song and is relaxing but it tingles with peculiar musical twists; perhaps you'd call this jazzy folk music. Mary Rocap is a skilled songwriter and singer from North Carolina. Listen to her this Wednesday (3/7/18) on our weekly facebook live!

"Long Hot Summer Days"

Long hot summer days are what we're longing for and this song is a pretty good substitute to have while we wait. We are so impressed with the feel of this song, it drags like it's dripping with summer sweat and it's as sweet sounding as that fruit jar full of iced tea. We know Sara Watkins from Nickle Creek and love her solo stuff; she's got an great mix of Americana styles in her music. This song though was the perfect fit for the playlist... so yes, you're welcome.

"Riverside Hotel"

WHAT an outrageously beautifully written song this is. Warning = it's kind of sad. But you'll love it... we promise... Anna Tivel is from Portland, Oregon, and to copy from her facebook page bio: "Anna Tivel has spend some quality hours in a dodge caravan repeating lyrical lines over and over until the words fall in time with the windshield wipers." She writes in dodge caravans in the rain, we absolutely love her and her music. This song that we feature is telling the story of a homeless person who has stationed himself across from the construction site of a "riverside hotel." The images, the sounds, and the perspective described for the listener is truly worth a listening to.

"Jenny Jenkins"

We chose this song, we have to confess, because of the artwork on the album. We walked by their album in a store months ago and I guess it really made an impression because here we are today, finding it on Spotify. We played a few of their songs and have found that their sound is equally matched to the coolness of their artwork. Jenny Jenkins is a song about two young trouble makers, living life with no regrets. This is a band you want to know about; especially for their fresh folk sound. This song is a lot of fun and we bet you'll hear it and want to follow them on Spotify.

We are back to looking at local bands this week for the Neville's Quarter's Acoustic Breakdown Spotify Playlist!

We added the musicians Charles Latham, Becca Rae, the Couldn't Be Happiers, the Mysti Mayhem Trio, and Kenny Jackson. Respectively, their songs are "Dressed up for Nothin'," "Ain't Ashamed," "Let's Not Bury the Obvious," "Good Day to Be Alive," and "The Shortest Day / Set the Log Alight." It's always such a terrific surprise to see that there is SO much talent in area we live in. 

"Dressed up for Nothin'"

This song had us laughing the whole time. The lyrics were sad and oddly familiar... that time when you get everything ready for a big date and you're not sure the other person even remembered. The song has this calm, happy go lucky, tempo and almost a casual honky tonk walk; which makes the feelings of insecurity and panic in the words all the more amusing. The character to whom this awkward situation is happening to is talking to the "absent date" the whole time as if trying to play it cool. It's pretty hilarious, give this song a listen!

"Ain't Ashamed"
By Becca Rae

Becca Rae has an incredible voice! She got the country singer belting thing down; it's full of power, edged with pain, and perfectly melodious. She hardly needs any other instrumentation; and perhaps she knows this, having only a single guitar to accompany her voice. Personally, it was hard to listen to the words because the vocals are so skillfully expressed, they were all my mind wanted to pay attention to. But seriously, Becca Rae is a great musician and has a lot more to offer than just her voice; she's a great story teller! Listen to her tonight at IMURJ at 8pm!

"Let's Not Bury the Obvious"

This duo is so cool and they fit so well together musically. The words are great mix of modern lingo with an old folk feel, which I think is part of their appeal. They are experts at combining the new and the old. This song is upbeat and feel-good. I imagine it's really fun to sing this song with someone you care about, so I suggest you put it on the car stereo on repeat on your next road trip.

"Good Day to Be Alive"
By Mysti Mayhem Trio

The lead vocalist's voice drips like metaphorical saucy chocolate, it's truly luscious and luxurious to listen to. It's a good day to be alive when you're starting it off listening to this song. The orchestration of the band is put together well; it's balanced and retains the same smooth swing throughout the whole song. Love this song, we're so happy to have discovered it.

"The Shortest Day/ Set the Log Alight"

This is an original by Kenny, who is a blessing to the Old Time genre of music. An instrumental song, it's a delightful tune that lightens the spirit. I'm guessing that is exactly what was felt by the composer because it is titled "the shortest day," a time when we need more light (both in our spirit and physical world). In the middle is switches into the "set the log alight" theme, which is more upbeat and gets you tapping your foot. These musicians are treasures to North Carolina, so we hope you'll give them a listen.

The Weekly Neville's Quarter Acoustic Breakdown Update - February 17th, 2018

What follows is the Valentine's edition of the Neville's Quarter's Acoustic Breakdown Spotify Playlist! 

We added the bands We Banjo 3, Flatt Lonesome, The Amity Front, and Elephant Revival. Respectively, their songs  are "Ain't Nobody Else Like You," "Never Let Me Go," "She Don't Lie," and "Hello You Who." We tried to pick the most romantic songs to provide you all warm fuzzy feelings for the rest of the week. 

In addition to those four musicians, we added ourselves!

Here's a love song vocal duet to play to your love and make them feel special. Put this tune in the background whisper sweet nothings while you hand them roses and/or tickets to Merlefest.  Because they'll be there this Spring! We're certainly hoping to see them there. 

"Never Let Me Go"

Fun, FUN, and fun. Dance with your partner while listening to this wonderful song. It's about never letting go of your partner. The harmonies are perfect and there is some great instrumentation. You'll probably want to put this one on repeat; it's too short!

"She Don't Lie"
By The Amity Front
At first you may think that there are some negative resentful tones to the song, because of the title and the first line of the song. However, the song turns surprisingly sweet and romantic. Though there is that tone of sad rejection, it doesn't make it any less of a Valentine's Day Song. Perhaps this song is more for those who are experiencing unrequited love. For those of you out there; hang in there and listen to this beautiful song to make you feel a little better.

"Hello You Who"
By Elephant Revival.
This one is just awesome sounding and the lyrics qualify as poetry:

That belongs on a love note, no? The song is quiet, delicate, but totally encompassing; I think a lot of the power comes from the low notes from the cello and the soft rich tones of Bonnie Paine's voice.

"What Do You Dream About"

When you're in love, all your dreams involve that person whom you cherish most of all. This song rotates on that idea and with the idea that the other person "knows" the same feeling. The song is for sweethearts and dreamy eyed admirers. Happy Valentines Day! 💕💕💕💕
